For its entire history, the USA has been an Oligarchy in which a bastion of elites, the wealthy and wealthy adjacent have made all the rules, all the laws and dictated all norms. Until one hundred years of Civil Rights struggles finally gained traction in the 1960s, wealthy white males and their middle managers determined the spoils of everyone's labor whether White, Black, male or female. Fair hiring practices, fair housing opened doors for middle and lower class White men, for all White women that might still be closed, today, if Fannie Lou Hamer hadn't gotten sick and tired of being sick and tired. Black men and women and other "minorities" got a quota of more respect and with just that small quota made America stronger, safer, wealthier, certainly more fun and the most envied nation on the planet.
